I thought I was the only one wishing there was a better way to #followfriday.

And then the fabulous Kat Jaibur (@katjaib) came up with the ingenius Katnip Awards. Instead of flooding your Friday Twitter stream with a multitude of tweeters to follow, she assembles her hot list of greats on her blog, “Kat and Tonic.”

Wow. Total “I-coulda-had-a-V8″ moment. Love the idea… and even better she’s got some awesome recommendations, and goes into detail about why you should follow. Kat’s figured out how to maximize the social media experience with amazing authenticity. If I didn’t like her so much already I’d be gushing even more.

Take a look at her #followfriday lists. Beats the requisite Twitter clutterstream and reveals some pretty great tweeters.

  • We at the Akatemy want to say again that we were in NO WAY influenced by this review.
Congratulations to Michelle and the other 7 winners this week.

  • Thanks! Yes, the #followfriday was really wearing thin. It's so much more useful to be able to follow your favorite bloggers and see who they recommend and why. It adds so much value to following choices, not to mention it connects people who will appreciate each other.

Nice blog, Michelle, and great post highlighting Kat's creativity.

As someone who's been staying off Twitter on Fridays for the past few months *to avoid* the #followFriday frenzy, I love what Kat, and Jim (@smashadv), Gini (@ginidietrich), Scott (@unmarketing), and others are doing by moving their good follow recommendations off Twitter.

Yes, Kat's presentation of her recommended friends as "award recipients" is well done.
  • Yep - this is the way to go with concern to finding and recommending people on Twitter. I started doing this in February or March of this year, and it took off. But like all ideas, they can be better. And what Kat Jaibur did with Katnip Awards is definitely a step up.
  • I want to play in the "I love Kat" game! I LOVE KAT! And Michelle, do you know that she has blog envy (of you)??

LOVE Total “I-coulda-had-a-V8″ moment. VERY FUNNY!
  • I should point out that I was inspired by the way Jim Mitchem (@smashadv) moved it to his blog: Friday Feeding Frenzy http://bit.ly/yRxT2.

And Gini Dietrich (@ginidietrich)with her Follow Friday http://tinyurl.com/nvachy.

Now Scott Stratten (@unmarketing)has taken it to video. http://bit.ly/y1FyX #FollowFive.
    As has Julio Varela(@julito77) http://bit.ly/11RAYi
    Hope the trend continues!
  • Yes, Kat is definitely on to something big with her so-called Katnip Awards.

As I wrote on my own blog recently (July 21), “While it’s not an Emmy, an Oscar, a Clio or a Hatch, a Katnip is the first award that I know of to be given for tweeting — and just for coming up with the idea, Kat herself deserves kudos.”

And so do you, Michelle, for this excellent post on the Katnip Awards. Nice work!
  • Thanks, Kat! You've always had an awesome Twitter Feed and you add real value! When I came across your Katnip Awards while I was still developing the blog I knew I had to do a feature on it. I love #followfriday but always felt it wasn't enough. Every week I'd promote my closest connections (while still having to leave great people out) and realizing there's no way anyone could possibly follow them all or even know why to follow them. I'm so glad to see you round it up this way. I hope you don't mind if I "adopt" your idea from time to time!
  • Excellent post. We love the Katnip Awards! A loyal reader and follower of a great friend.

I am one of the #followfriday individuals who would rather do the long lists any more. In fact, all I do know is do a video blog each Friday and list five people on the video to follow and give reasons why. I love doing it this way.

All this crazy #followfriday clogging also led me to create #vivaviernes (a FF with some soul), where we tweet about people we like, but also about things we like, like music, movies, etc. It actually led to a VivaViernes iTunes Mix.

I love Fridays on Twitter and have been gravitating more to people who take the time to go the extra step (like Kat) and explain why you should follow people and give value to your reasons.

Keep up the awesome work. Love you blog.

    Julio
  • Michelle, What a beautiful new blog you have. CONGRATULATIONS!

I love everything about it. And the "Brands in Action" spot had me weepy. Damn it!

Thanks so much for the review of my Katnip Awards. They are truly a joy to do, and I love hearing how they add value to people's Twitter follows. Now folks, when you see Michelle getting one, know that it was already in my plans. And she so richly deserves it for being one of the smartest, "real-est" creative people I've met on Twitter -- or anywhere.
